Yachtmaster Ocean

Hello  ‘blue  water’  Yachtsmen

Take the ‘Ocean Yachtmaster’ shore-based course over the coming winter 2011/12?
Confirm if you are interested to be kept updated with the planning.

Ocean Yachtmaster courses are few and far between because the vast majority of yacht cruisers stick to the coastlines. Non-the-less the syllabus for the course is very interesting and if I can muster a minimum nine participants then a course would be on.

*      The group would be split into teams of three or four people with each team exploring the issues relating to alternative ocean challenges.  For example UK to Rio, Caribbean to New Zealand, the North West Passage etc. Team work is especially useful for getting the hang of sextant principles, practice and calculation.

*      I would plan to run the course at different offered venues through the winter, sometimes two or three hour evenings and sometimes longer sessions as appropriate and with a total of forty plus hours, plus adjournment to the pub. Cost for the course £380 inclusive.

*      Topics within the course are:

*      Use of the sextant for navigation, which brings with it an appreciation of astronomical things 50% of course content! Plus all those topics you hadn’t thought of :

*      Passage plan. Best course, winds, charts, currents, best period, risk periods, plan, escape plan.

*      Sailing equipment and spares.

*      Communications radio, SSB, satellite communications.

*      Food provisioning. Do you want to live on beans? How long can you keep food fresh?

*      Power provisioning. Auto steer devices, Plotters, RADAR, fridges, radios, personnel devices. How much do you need, how much can you generate? - Not enough.

*      Fuel.

*      Hurricane avoidance, emergency equipment.

*      Legalities and insurance.

*      Your comfort physically and mentally.

Please confirm if you are interested and I would keep you in touch with the planning

Dates: Course dates are organised on Saturdays according to demand. Typically a course is run every two months

Preparation: If you paid in advance you will be sent the G22 booklet to browse through. It is always useful to become familiar with the phonetic alphabet. Try the questions at the bottom of the page.

Joining Instructions: The course starts 09.00 prompt and concludes at 17.00. Tea, coffee, and lunch break (a maximum, 30 minutes). Sandwiches can be purchased from the late shopper next door).

What to bring: paper and pencil, G22 booklet sent, to you, if you have paid in advance. The course content is broadly as per the RYA book contents, with continual evaluation and a short test at the end.

After the course: Subject to achieving the acceptable standard you will send the, approved application form to the RYA together with a passport size photo, and £30 cheque payable to RYA for the Short Range Certificate charge.

How to get there: The venue is the
HEATHERFIELD CONSERVATIVE CLUB, Totley Rise, Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield.
  S17 4DT
Follow Abbeydale Road (A627) - past Millhouses park - past Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet - past the Abbeydale Sports Club - Onto the duel carriageway - Through the lights - in 300m some shops on right - immediately some shops on left as the carriageway bends left - The club is immediately there on the left. You have gone 50m too far if the road becomes a single carriageway. There are three or four parking spaces on the left on the main road.

A few questions: VHF radio, How far will it transmit? VHF radio Will it transmit around a hill-side or headland? What channel number would you use to contact the marina for a well earned berth for the night? What is this squelch thing? What are the VHF distress, safety, and calling up channel number? What does Press to Talk PTT mean?
